We’d just finished feeding our two old sweeties and were loading feed pans and snacks into the car when I saw the rabbit.

“Look,” I whispered to my husband. “It’s Smoke.”

I pointed to the small grayish rabbit hunched statue-like under the mounting stand.

“How do you know this one is Smoke?” my husband asked.

I swung the bucket of Horse Candy into the back of the car. “Oh, I don’t. They’re all named Smoke.”

My husband nodded. “Oh.”

I named them Smoke because they’re invisible. At least they try to be.

“They’re  working under cover.”

“The rabbits are working?” my husband asked, his voice tinged with humor.

“Yup. Covert ops.”

My husband rolled his eyes. “Covert ops?” he asked.

“Yes. Why are you repeating everything I say?” I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “The rabbits are spooks.”

“Spooks?” my husband repeated.

“You’re doing it again,” I said. “They are spies.”

“I know what spooks are,” my husband replied rather testily. “So what are they investigating?”

“Rustlers,” I answered. “Two men have already died. That’s when they called in the rabbits. They can go deep under cover. I mean, who would suspect a rabbit?”

“Right,” my husband said. “So let me get this straight. The rabbits out here are working under cover investigating a ring of horse thieves.”

“Yup.”

“And you know this because?”

I sighed. “I’m able to communicate with them.”

He nodded again and fired up the engine. “Has anyone ever told you that you have a rich imagination?”

I grinned. “Why honey, that’s one of the nicest things you’ve ever said to me. It’s music to a writer’s ears.”

I waved at one of the rabbits sitting by the side of the road. “See ya tomorrow, Smoke.”

He wriggled his ears.
